The world has seen a huge hit with the spread of COVID-19.

Many people are not sure what to do and where to go.

There is a large amount of fear present because there is uncertainty about illness, loss of life, your job being affected, loss of income, and lack of leadership in a scary time.

The purpose of this post is to hopefully provide you with some guidance and help to navigate these scary times to help optimize you and your pet’s health.

Let’s start with what we do know:

Can my pets contract COVID-19?

Here’s a response from American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA):

“We don’t have a clear answer at this time, however, currently, there is no evidence pets can become sick from COVID-19. Infectious disease experts, as well as the CDC, OIE, WHO indicate there is no evidence to suggest that pet dogs or cats can be a source of infection, including the spread of COVID-19 to people.”

I am ill with COVID-19; are there special precautions I should take in caring for my pet?

AVMA Statement:

“The AVMA recommends a common sense approach when interacting with your pets or other animals in the home, including service animals. Inform your physician and public health official that you have an animal in the home. Although there have not been reports of pets or other animals becoming sick with COVID-19, it is still recommended that people sick with COVID-19 limit contact with animals until more information is known about the virus.”

“If you are ill with COVID-19, have another member of your household take care of the walking, feeding, and playing with your pet. If you have a service animal or you must care for your pet, wear a facemask. Do not share food, dishes, towels, cups, eating utensils, bedding; do not kiss or hug your pet; wash your hands before and after any contact with your pet or service animal.”

How we are moving forward here at The Natural Pet Doctor:

If you didn’t already know or utilize this service, we offer PHONE consults! These consults are great for people who are not in the Northern Colorado region, but also if you are home-bound with a pet who needs some help.

We can make recommendations for foods that you can add into the diet to help optimize wellness, ship herbs and supplements directly to you, and help heal your pet from chronic conditions like allergies, metabolic diseases like kidney disease, and complement cancer treatments.

Make sure to give us a call today or book an appointment here, and we can help your pet thrive naturally while we are all stuck at home.

You may find that we limit in-person consultations over the next few weeks, due to attempting to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and limiting the spread of the virus. Please let us know ahead of time if you are experiencing any cold or flu symptoms, we can all help each other stay healthy and keep the spread to a minimum.

What are some of the things you can do to help your pet’s immune system?

1) Feed nutritious foods that help optimize your dog and cat’s immune health and reduce inflammation

Add in organic blueberries (yes they can be frozen), leafy greens like lightly steamed kale, cabbage, Brussel sprouts, broccoli, and pumpkin. These vegetables are just a few safe and healthy foods you can feed. You can also add 1 garlic clove per 20 pounds to help provide an anti-viral effect to your pet’s food. I recommend crushing it or chopping it up and cooking it in a little bit of avocado oil.

2) Add in supplements that support immune health

Standard Process has a supplement called Immune System Support that can be beneficial for your pets. It contains eleuthero (Siberian ginseng) which is an adaptogen that supports boosting or calming down the immune system. This supplement provides whole food nutritional support.

Another supplement that is beneficial is RX Coriolus Forte. This amazing product is a mixture of mushrooms that help the body in many different ways including protecting the immmune system, but also complementing cancer treatments. We also have an Immune Support Package that you can take advantage of right now that includes this product along with OncoSupport (if your pet has a stressed immune system or cancer) and CurcuWIN (curcumin) to help with inflammation. 3) Continue to be active

Both pets and ourselves need movement in our lives every day to improve circulation which is huge for our immune systems.

Get outside and go for a walk or run with your pet every day. During this time when we are practicing (or should be) practicing social distancing, the CDC is recommending 6 feet distance from people, which is totally doable on the walking trails.

So get out there and get some fresh air. Put the phone down and stop worrying the world is ending! I promise you will feel better!
