What kind of food are you feeding your pets?
Is your cat currently eating dry food?
Are you thinking of transitioning your dog or cat off of dry food?
Does your pet have any health issues like allergies, GI upset, or just seems like they don’t like their food?
Food is the foundation of health, and unfortunately, the pet food industry is not well-regulated. Pet foods contain poor-quality meats, GMOs, pesticides, artificial flavors, and chemicals that can adversely affect our pet’s health. Many pet parents are turning to a home-cooked diet, but the diet they are making is not a balanced diet and can lead to major adverse health issues down the road for the pet.
Dogs and cats’ nutritional requirements are different from ours, and one of the major deficiencies that can arise in a home-made diet is calcium deficiency. When this mineral is deficient, your pet can develop bone deficiencies, like rickets, or even develop angular limb deformities.
This deficiency typically arises when pet parents are using just meat and vegetables and aren’t adding a calcium source like bones or bone meal to the diet. Meat is high in phosphorus and very low in calcium, which is why we need to add additional sources of vitamins either in a synthetic form or through high-calcium food sources.
Another mineral that is commonly deficient is iron. Iron is essential for helping red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body. If your pet is iron deficient, you may notice increased lethargy, rapid breathing, and weakness. An essential source of iron is organ meats. The liver, kidney, heart organs are nature’s vitamins. Your pet doesn’t need a lot of these, but they’re essential to ensuring your pet’s nutritional needs are being met.
These are just a few ways it’s important to learn how to create a balanced home-cooked diet. A home-made diet can be rewarding and beneficial to optimizing your pet’s health.
